Twelfth Night, or What You Will by the Electric City Players
January 30 - February 1, 2025
Regular Price: $39 incl. HST & Fees
Student Price: $29 incl. HST & Fees
Viola, a young gentlewoman, finds herself alone on the coast of Illyria following a shipwreck that she is certain has taken her brother from her. Seeking safety, she disguises herself as a young boy, Cesario, and enters the service of Duke Orsino, quickly falling in love with him but unable to profess that love while she maintains her facade. Orsino suffers exquisitely in unrequited love for the beautiful Countess Olivia who rebuffs his advances as she grieves her own recently dead brother and father. Desperate to win her over anyway, Orsino sends Cesario to court the Countess on his behalf, but Olivia quickly falls for the charming and eloquent servant instead! Meanwhile, Olivia’s uncle Toby has invited the witless but wealthy Sir Andrew to stay with him to drink and carouse while the lady of the house has shut herself away. Only the severe and serious Malvolio seems to have any interest in maintaining order and rule, and so begins a plot to comically humiliate the spoil-sport steward. And weaving through it all is Feste, the jester, whose sharp wit and poignant songs cut to the heart of the desires, delusions, virtues, and vices that animate the inhabitants of Illyria. At once hilarious and moving, Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night explores the power of desire in all its complex forms, and the uncertain borders between love and grief, exposing our all-too-human tendency to laugh so that we don’t cry
